Ethics

The last topic of course. I still don't know if I'll proceed the blog or will kill it. The problem is that it is easy to write when the theme is defined, but it is hard to define the theme by myself.

What I got from this topic, is more clear vision of some aspects, like open source or definition of hacker society, or rebuilding of my behaviour in net, but still the ethics in common is so unclear... And the problem is not in the course. In my opinion, it gave a lot, but the problem is in ethics definition itself. The code of conduct must give us understanding of good manners in society, or company. However everyone defines by himself what is good for him, so as every company defines their code and so on.

So in common it looks like every society measures the "level of good" by their needs or targets. Still we have to stay a human in every situation...

As the last task I need to analyze the code of conduct of any IT company. As fan of Open Source and alternatives for commercial projects, I chose the Ubuntu CoC.

But how to analyze? I can only say why I chose it...

I like the first sentence in it: "Ubuntu is about showing humanity to one another: the word itself captures the spirit of being human."

I also like the topics covered by the code.

Be considerate is to think about users and colleagues when taking decisions. Means that we must neglace our egoism.
Be respectful is to respect opponent, and avoid personal attach.

Take RESPONSIBILITY for words and actions, this is where I feel the lack in the world at all. It is became to norm blame situation, time and anything else to take off responsibility for decisions.

Value decisiveness, clarity and consensus. Disagreements must be resolved constructively. The denial of other ideas and meanings doesn't push us to the targets. My favourite rule is to offer alternative, if you deny.

Also I liked the section about leadership. Sometimes we forget that the higher position is not a title, but privilege and responsibility and support of those, who make you a leader (your team).

I also liked the ideas of meritocracy, teamwork and credit. Work not done by one. Everyone is supported by team, followers, and so on... And leader must not forget about this in every situation.

What I dislike, that the every Code is only recommendations to follow, it still doesn't save us from bad manners: our (we aren't saint) or other's.
